College Football Bowl Season

As my loyal readers know, I have had critical comments about football from time to time.  I enjoy college sports and college football is an enjoyable sport to watch. What has bothered me about collegiate football is not the sport, but rather the  administrative culture which surrounds the sport on college campuses.

Again, I like to watch college football games.  It was immensely enjoyable to watch the UCLA football team beat USC in the Coliseum, when all the football media experts picked USC to win without hesitation.  I was a very proud alumni watching from my parent's house in Iowa while munching on Thanksgiving leftovers.

Speaking of leftovers, that is what the football bowl season has become.  Sometimes it is best to just toss the remains of that week old meal into the trash than heat it back up - Same goes for too many of the bowls.  When the stadium is empty, the name of the bowl is some corporate name we aren't sure what it is, the players look like they just want to be somewhere else, and the announcers are mainlining coffee to get excited to announce the game, it is time toss the leftovers of the college football season.

And now, the buffet of 35 football bowls for your culinary pleasure:

ESPN
GILDAN NEW MEXICO BOWL
Dec. 21, 2013 | 2:00 PM ET
ALBUQUERQUE, NM
(6-6, 4-5 Pac-12)

The t-shirt bowl - I do like the Gildan t-shirts though!   Best thing for viewership is this is the first bowl of the season.

ROYAL PURPLE LAS VEGAS BOWL
Dec. 21, 2013 | 3:30 PM ET
LAS VEGAS, NV
(11-1, 7-1 MW)
25USC
(9-4, 6-3 Pac-12)

I have no idea what "Royal Purple" is - I Google'd it and the all knowing internet said it was "high performance synthetic lubricants".    Attendance should be good - both schools driving distance from 'Vegas baby!!!!  Let's guestimate the number of fights on the strip that night?

FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO BOWL
Dec. 21, 2013 | 5:30 PM ET
BOISE, ID
(8-4, 6-2 MAC)

I was in Boise on December 7th - 6 inches of snow and the temperature was 12 degrees. I don't think it is going to be much warmer on the 21st, but they do have that famous blue field to go with the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL
Dec. 21, 2013 | 9:00 PM ET
NEW ORLEANS, LA
(7-5, 5-3 C-USA)
(8-4, 5-2 Sun Belt)

Could be the smartest of the bowl selection committees so far; in New Orleans and secured one team a couple of miles away and another an easy drive away.  I would actually go to this bowl because of the location and the environment!!!  The Quarter will be having some good times that night!

BEEF 'O' BRADY'S BOWL ST. PETERSBURG
Dec. 23, 2013 | 2:00 PM ET
SAINT PETERSBURG, FL
(7-5, 4-4 MAC)

The Delicious Bowl - Ohio has got to be excited....going to be much warmer in St. Pete than Athens!  I do like the triple alliteration of the title; would only be better if the bowl was in Brevard, Florida!

SHERATON HAWAII BOWL
Dec. 24, 2013 | 8:00 PM ET
HONOLULU, HI
(6-6, 4-5 Pac-12)

Still waiting for ESPN to call me to be a sideline reporter for this game, but I don't think I am pretty enough.  Boise hit the jackpot; got to leave the blue field for the ocean blue!  I watch this game each year, just for the lead in/out shots for commercials because they show the beach, the mountains, the ocean.....I gotta find a way to live there!!!

LITTLE CAESARS BOWL
Dec. 26, 2013 | 6:00 PM ET
DETROIT, MI

Mmmmmm......pizza!  They better give away free pizza to get fans to show up the day after Christmas in a dome bowl!

S.D. COUNTY CREDIT UNION POINSETTIA
Dec. 26, 2013 | 9:30 PM ET
SAN DIEGO, CA
(12-1, 8-0 MAC)

The name was so long they had to shorten San Diego to SD!!  San Diego is the new favorite city of Northern Illinois!!!  This is one of those 'why am I living in the north' bowls, when they show the game on tv.

MILITARY BOWL
Dec. 27, 2013 | 2:30 PM ET
ANNAPOLIS, MD
(9-4, 7-1 C-USA)
(7-5, 3-5 ACC)

The Military Bowl, which is sponsored by Northrop Grumman;  for some reason this just does not 'taste' right to me

TEXAS BOWL
Dec. 27, 2013 | 6:00 PM ET
HOUSTON, TX
(6-6, 4-4 ACC)
(8-4, 4-4 Big Ten)

The New Orleans Bowl was smarter than the Texas Bowl - Could they find two teams further away to come to Houston?  I predict two things; Reliant Stadium will be not full and the food will taste delicious!!!

FIGHT HUNGER BOWL
Dec. 27, 2013 | 9:30 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
(8-4, 5-4 Pac-12)

Still trying to determine how a bowl will fight hunger?  Would it not be better to donate the cost of the bowl to buy food for people that are hungry?

RUSSELL ATHLETIC BOWL
Dec. 28, 2013 | 6:45 PM ET
ORLANDO, FL
(11-1, 7-1 American)

I think Russell ponied up some more cash for their bowl than Gildan - They obtained two teams with winning records and Orlando!

BUFFALO WILD WINGS BOWL
Dec. 28, 2013 | 10:15 PM ET
TEMPE, AZ
(7-5, 3-5 Big Ten)
(7-5, 5-4 Big 12)

Mmmmm......wings!  I recently 'discovered' wings and I must say, they are good.  I know, better late than never, kinda like the collegevolleyballcoach.com Facebook page!

BELL HELICOPTER ARMED FORCES BOWL
Dec. 30, 2013 | 11:45 AM ET
FORT WORTH, TX

Still not 'tasty'......

Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl
Dec. 30, 2013 | 3:15 PM ET
NASHVILLE, TN
(7-5, 3-5 SEC)

Tried to count the number of letters between this bowl title and the one in San Diego, but my head started to hurt!

VALERO ALAMO BOWL
Dec. 30, 2013 | 6:45 PM ET
SAN ANTONIO, TX
(10-2, 7-2 Pac-12)
(8-4, 7-2 Big 12)

I have watched The Tour of Texas qualifier tournament in the Alamo Dome and it was interesting.  If the volleyball court was in the middle, it was light up like the sun, but if the court was on the perimeter, I thought an eclipse was happening.  I am jealous of all the unreal Tex Mex which will be consumed with out me that day!

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY BOWL
Dec. 30, 2013 | 10:15 PM ET
SAN DIEGO, CA
(10-3, 8-1 Pac-12)
(7-5, 4-5 Big 12)

Now, this is interesting - a bowl game sponsored by a university.  I checked out the school's website and they don't have athletics; I guess this is their athletics? They are based in LaJolla, which is Spanish for "a really nice place to live".

AdvoCare V100 BOWL
Dec. 31, 2013 | 12:30 PM ET
SHREVEPORT, LA
(7-5, 4-5 Pac-12)

The only reason I know what AdvoCare V100 is, is because I had to look it up when I did a college football write up a few year's ago on this site.  I drove past that stadium a good 100 times when I was doing an airport drive when at LaTech.  I liked it better when it was the Poulan Weedeater Bowl....

HYUNDAI SUN BOWL
Dec. 31, 2013 | 2:00 PM ET
EL PASO, TX
17UCLA
(9-3, 6-3 Pac-12)

Even as an alumni, I am not excited about this bowl; would rather be playing someone else than Va Tech and I am believing that most of the UCLA team may be feeling the same.  Again, I have driven past this bowl a bunch of times when going to play UT El Paso!  It is an interesting visual, because the stadium is built into the side of a hill.  Can't imagine much of a crowd; pull two teams from the opposite side of the country and have them play in El Paso?

AutoZone LIBERTY BOWL
Dec. 31, 2013 | 4:00 PM ET
MEMPHIS, TN
(10-3, 7-1 C-USA)

Got nothing for this one....

Chick-fil-A BOWL
Dec. 31, 2013 | 8:00 PM ET
ATLANTA, GA
24Duke
(10-3, 6-2 ACC)
(8-4, 4-4 SEC)

Mmmmmm.....chicken!  I had to check and make sure this bowl was not on a Sunday; that would have been ironic.

TAXSLAYER.com GATOR BOWL
Jan. 1, 2014 | 12:00 PM ET
JACKSONVILLE, FL
(8-4, 5-3 Big Ten)
(8-4, 5-3 SEC)

TAXSLAYER!!!!!!  The power of the power conferences; two 8-4 teams get a New Year's bowl game.

****We still have 11 more bowls to go; I am already tired of writing this....too many bowls!!!

HEART OF DALLAS BOWL
Jan. 1, 2014 | 12:00 PM ET
DALLAS, TX
(7-5, 5-3 MW)
(8-4, 6-2 C-USA)

What? Seriously, this has got to be a made up bowl......

OUTBACK BOWL
Jan. 1, 2014 | 1:00 PM ET
TAMPA, FL
(8-4, 5-3 Big Ten)
16LSU
(9-3, 5-3 SEC)

Mmmm.....steak!  Iowa gets to work on their sun burns in Tampa.

CAPITAL ONE BOWL
Jan. 1, 2014 | 1:00 PM ET
ORLANDO, FL
(9-3, 6-2 Big Ten)

What bowl is in your wallet?

ROSE BOWL GAME PRES. BY VIZIO
Jan. 1, 2014 | 5:00 PM ET
PASADENA, CA
(11-2, 7-2 Pac-12)
(12-1, 8-0 Big Ten)

The Rose Bowl is a wonderful stadium and is actually called the Rose Bowl when they are not having a bowl game there.  The old joke in LA was that every time it was a beautiful day when the Rose Bowl was on television, there would be 50,000 people moving to southern California that year!

TOSTITOS FIESTA BOWL
Jan. 1, 2014 | 8:30 PM ET
GLENDALE, AZ
15UCF
(11-1, 8-0 American)
(11-1, 8-1 Big 12)

Mmmmm....chips!  Baylor wins the Big 12, makes athletic history, is all fired up for their bowl and they get.....UCF?

ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL
Jan. 2, 2014 | 8:30 PM ET
NEW ORLEANS, LA
(10-2, 7-2 Big 12)
(11-1, 7-1 SEC)

In Nawlen's - this will be something to witness; power conference teams, big name coaches, historic programs and drunk beyond belief fans on Bourbon Street!!

AT&T COTTON BOWL
Jan. 3, 2014 | 7:30 PM ET
ARLINGTON, TX
(10-2, 7-2 Big 12)
(11-2, 7-1 SEC)

The Cotton Bowl which is not played at the Cotton Bowl........Jerry Jones should worry about his other football games.

DISCOVER ORANGE BOWL
Jan. 3, 2014 | 8:30 PM ET
MIAMI, FL
(10-2, 7-1 ACC)
(12-1, 8-0 Big Ten)

Trying......thinking.....it will be warm......nope, that is all I got

BBVA COMPASS BOWL
Jan. 4, 2014 | 1:00 PM ET
BIRMINGHAM, AL
(8-4, 5-3 American)

Another looker upper.....BBVA Compass is a bank.  This is definitely stale leftovers.....

GODADDY BOWL
Jan. 5, 2014 | 9:00 PM ET
MOBILE, AL
(7-5, 5-2 Sun Belt)
(10-2, 7-1 MAC)

Hasn't school already started in the Spring semester by now?  Even Danica Patrick doing donuts in the middle of the field with her NASCAR ride would not entice me to watch this one.

VIZIO BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Jan. 6, 2014 | 8:30 PM ET
PASADENA, CA
(12-1, 7-1 SEC)

Hey, two chances to see the Rose Bowl stadium and beautiful southern California can't be bad.  With the craziness of Auburn football the last two games, I am expecting Thor and Loki to emerge in the last two minutes!
